Kick Off Weekend

June 21, Clayton Central Library and Fayette Library were the hosts of Kidz 4 Money’s summer kick offs for TEEN SUMMIT 2008-Atlanta. Each library scored a perfect '10' in its operation and delivery. Everyone involved was a winner and every teen went home with a life changing experience. The sessions included discussions on Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy, Leadership, and MindSet of Wealth®.

Both libraries had filled rooms of teenagers listening to powerful messages from Dr. Shilene Johnson-educational & business consultant; Theo Allen-author of “Steps of a Good Man”; Avon Drummond of Primerica; Jabez Shakur of Maroon Real Estate Network; Rodney J. Tookes Sr. of Georgia Power Company; Cynthia Harper of My Favorite Charities; and Larry H. Jemison Jr.-author of “How to Make It in a World that Wasn’t Made for You”. There lessons of empowerment were met with comprehension, laughter, and applauds.

Sponsors hurried to participate in the kick offs by offering gifts that ranged to Blue Tooth cellular phones to ice cream surprises. Businesses that helped make the day possible were AT&T of Jonesboro, Olive Garden of Jonesboro, Pin Strikes Bowling of Stockbridge, Honey Baked Ham of Jonesboro, Inside Scoops Ice Cream of Jonesboro, Verizon Wireless of Fayetteville, World Gym of Peachtree City, Syenergy SPA of Peachtree City, Wireless Toys of Peachtree City, and Cookies by Design of Peachtree City. Lunch for both locations was supplied by Chick-fil-A of Jonesboro and Quiznos of Fayetteville.

Youth volunteers for the event Jamilia McCulland, Sayeeda Wallace, Carrington Maxwell, and Cuenton Billingsley reported that their attending friends 'could not get enough'. When Lattice Hardwick, founder of Kidz 4 Money, was asked of her experience, she responded, “So many wonderful people have contributed to this cause and now we must keep it going”.

The next scheduled TEEN SUMMIT 2008-Atlanta is at the Douglasville Library on July 17 and the Mechanicsville library on July 18. Visit the Kidz 4 Money’s website for more information and updates.

Memorial Day Trouble

If you Google ‘teen murder 2008’, you will see approximately 711,000 entries of respective places and people before it ends. Some are victims and some are suspects. Of course, many of these murder cases are from other parts of the world, but compare this 2008 number to 677,000 for all of 2007 and we are only halfway through the year. With summer break here and our ongoing recession, danger lurks the playing field for our teens.

This Memorial Day may have been a sample of what is to come in the near future. The three-day celebration ended with a series of violent crimes involving teens throughout the nation.
